The number of bears on the Iberian Peninsula is limited, with the population divided into two small groups in the north. In-breeding and genetic depletion constitutes a serious threat to the bears’ survival in this area. For preservation purposes, the possibility of introducing bears from other areas to the Iberian Peninsula has been discussed, but it has been objected that this would entail the extinction of the genetically unique Iberian bear. It has also been feared that bears from other areas are not as well adapted to the living conditions on the Iberian Peninsula as the Spanish bears are.

Un des arguments souvent avancés contre la réintroduction d’animaux dans des régions où ils ont disparu, ou où ils sont en voie de disparition, est de dire que cela est très contestable du point de vue de la défense de la biodiversité, puisque ceux que l’on réintroduit n’auront pas le même pool génétique que ceux qui disparaissent ou qui ont disparu.

When the youngest son, 6-year-old Logan, hurled a shovel at it, the bear dropped the cooler and started toward the boy, Mr. Everhart said. A former Marine, he grabbed the closest thing he could find — a log from their stash of firewood.

“It happened to hit the bear in the head,” Mr. Everhart said. “I thought it just knocked it out but it actually ended up killing the bear.”

C’est exactement le genre de légendes que l’on faisait courir sur Davy Crockett (lui aussi tuait les ours à mains nues), mais là, c’est vrai…

En tout cas, il est certain que cela a plus de classe que de tuer d’un coup de fusil une ourse qui défend son petit…
