A female junior college student in Gifu Prefecture scrawled the nicknames of herself and her classmates, as well as an abbreviation of her school, on the wall of a world heritage cathedral in Florence, Italy, during a study trip in February, college officials revealed Tuesday.

Other tourists notified the two-year college by sending an e-mail message with a photo of the graffiti attached in March and the college apologized to the cathedral.

According to Gifu City Women’s College, first year students in the contemporary design department visited the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore during a trip on Feb. 18 and one of the students scrawled the graffiti on the marble wall of an observation platform in the cathedral with an oil-based pen, while five other students stood watching her.
